Pyrolysis Waste Processing

The processing of waste material generated onboard commercial and military vessels is an important part of day to day operations. With the introduction of increasingly stringent regional and international legislation it is important that ship operators are compliant and manage their impact on the marine environment by controlling the disposal of waste material generated on their ships.

Ships generate a mixture of waste streams that can include plastic, cardboard, paper, metal cans, and food waste. The ST150 -2 Pyrolysis process has the advantage, compared to other technologies, that it can process all of these waste streams in a single machine with no need for segregation. The ash is removed by an automatic process and a 90% reduction in volume can be achieved.

These fuel gases are combusted in the oxidiser, which is an exothermic reaction and hence produces excess heat which is used to heat the pyrolysis chamber to temperatures of 900 - 1100oC, allowing the process to become self sustaining.

The pyrolysis technology was originally developed for land based applications and has been used for the last 5 years on an industrial scale to process mixed waste streams including medical waste.

The ST150-2 is the second generation of pyrolysis equipment produced for the marine market and has already been procured by the Royal Navy for installation on its Helicopter Carrier HMS Ocean.
