Acoustic communication is important in a wide range of underwater applications. For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), it allows the transmission of sensor data or images and vehicle command and control. For many fixed and floating underwater systems, data can only be reviewed in real time using acoustic modems. For divers, effective communication can improve safety as well as enjoyment. For accurate ranging and position fixing, the capabilities inherent to the techniques developed by QinetiQ can be exploited.
